Ye have perverted the ways of the Lord, is his solemn accusation. Pervert means "to turn." (1) To cause to turn from what is considered right, natural, or true; misdirect; lead astray; corrupt. (2) To turn to an improper use, misuse. (3) To change or misapply the meaning of; misinterpret; distort; twist. (4) To bring into a worse condition; debase. (Webster's New World Dictionary.) Any one of these definitions, or all of them would fit the depraved purposes of the priests.
