From Shemlon, the Lamanites apparently had to travel "up" in elevation to reach the north of Shilom (Mosiah 10:8). Zeniff's army also comes "up" to this spot (Mosiah 10:10), which was not such difficult terrain that the Lamanites would not choose it for battle.
