We are never told the name of the leader of the first expedition but in Omni 1:28 we are told that he was a strong and stiffnecked man who was opposed to Zeniff's proposal for an alliance with the Lamanites. And when the leader ordered that Zeniff be slain for making such a proposal the entire excursion broke out into a bloody conflict so that all were slain except fifty. These survivors made their way back to Zarahemla.
