This verse is particularly difficult to fully understand, because Benjamin assumes a level of information among his listeners that is not part of our modern context. These elements include:
• This verse describes someone who does not know the name “by which ye are called,” a contrast with the servant in the previous verse who does know the name by which he is called.
• The ass was considered unclean.
• On the literal level, Benjamin is saying that an unclean animal would be driven away from one’s “clean” flocks.
• The action one would take in expelling the unclean animal is related to those who do not know the name by which they are called.
I see two possible readings for this verse. Likely Benjamin intended to evoke both meanings for his listeners. The first is the clear separation between good and evil. The good may remain with Yahweh, but the evil cannot. The second implication is that action must be taken to drive the unclean animal (individual) from the clean flock (congregation of the righteous). Because Benjamin has no police force, he is indicating a spiritual rejection by the heavenly king and possibly a physical banishment by the earthly king.
