“Wrestle… Before God”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
Enos chose this language to dramatize the effort necessary to school his spirit that he might be worthy to obtain a remission of sins and hear again the voice of the Lord. In a later text we read that Alma “labored much in the spirit, wrestling with God in mighty prayer,” that God would pour out his Spirit upon the people of Ammonihah that they might be receptive to his message (see Alma 8:10). The classic Old Testament story in which Jacob “wrestled a man” all night to obtain a blessing from him may likewise be a figurative expression (see Genesis 32:24-32).
