“Brother Jacob”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: The debate begins politely. Sherem’s addressing him as “Brother Jacob” creates the illusion of shared belief and their discussion as one between believers, not as an attack from the outside. The assumption is that a reconciliation is possible, that the doctrinal breach is not serious. This speech is a marvelous opening move, indicative of Sherem’s learning.
