Jacob identifies Sherem’s intentions, apparently without understanding his motives. He implicitly concedes Sherem’s erudition and power of speaking by describing the sources of his own conviction. He is confident, not because he can out-duel Sherem (though he will), but rather because Jacob’s conviction is founded on personal experience with Yahweh while Sherem preaches from his learning.
