Jacob emerges from this lengthy introduction as a very sensitive man. (See commentary accompanying Jacob 1:1.) He reminds his listeners that he is preaching this sermon because of Yahweh’s command. Jacob’s heart is heavy, not only for the “wounded” women and children, but also for those whom his message will accuse and condemn. He seems to be delaying the inevitable, setting the scene with appropriate declarations of his authority and calling.
