With the removal of all of the talented Israelites, only “the poorest sort of the people of the land” remained (2 Kgs. 24:14). Figuratively speaking, Jerusalem was inhabited by children with babes as rulers. Since age was considered as conferring wisdom, this image communicates the rulers’ inexperience and ineffectiveness.
