“Therefore Have I Set My Face Like a Flint”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Here is another Servant Song (see also commentary at 1 Nephi 21:1–6). The servant is likely not Israel as a people, because the suffering is undeserved; this could only be the Savior.

Incidents in Jesus’ life are prophesied, as also in Isaiah 53:4–9 and Mosiah 14:4–9 and see also Matthew 5:39; 26:67; 27:26.

To set one’s face “like a flint” (a very hard stone) means to be firm, steadfast, determined.

The “fear” spoken of in verse 10 means reverence, honor.
