Laman and Lemuel now feel that they must take action against the threat they have feared for years: that Nephi will rule over them. Nephi says as much. This fear/hatred dates back at least to obtaining the brass plates and perhaps before as Nephi’s righteousness made him his father’s natural ally and, in their eyes, his heir. Now the family splits into two factions.
