“My Heart is Broken and My Spirit is Contrite”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
A broken heart and contrite spirit is synonymous with godly sorrow for sin and a complete submission to the will of God. It is most perfectly captured in the expression of the Savior in the Grand Council in Heaven: “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever” (Moses 4:2). Again we find its perfect expression in Mary’s response to Gabriel’s announcement that she is to bear the child of God: “Be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38).
