“The Mercies of God in Sparing Their Lives”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: In Nephi’s summary, Lehi begins his story by recounting Yahweh’s protection during the beginning of their journey. He mentions the rebellion at sea to highlight the “mercies of God in sparing [our] lives.” Lehi’s purpose is to position the family story in the context of a protective and merciful God, one who has a divine purpose for them and, through Lehi, admonitions and blessings.

Redaction: Nephi continues to summarize Lehi’s words rather than quote them. Since he begins quoting Lehi in verse 4, this background information must be less critical to Nephi’s purpose. Perhaps Nephi is focusing on the New World rather than the Old, a transition that begins in the next verse.
