It was the understanding of the early leaders of the Church that Lehi's company reached the promised land at about 30 degrees south which would be near the modern city of Coquimbo, Chile. This information was recorded by Joseph Smith's assistant, Frederick G. Williams, on the back of section 7 of the Doctrine and Covenants and has been preserved in the Church Historian's office.
