“I Had Made a Bellows That I Might Have Wherewith to Blow the Fire”

W. Cleon Skousen

Talk about going back to the stone age! To make bellows Nephi sewed the skins of animals into bellows. Then he struck two stones together until he got the sparks needed to start a fire. But to make tools he needed a very special kind of fire. Nephi later describes how he taught his people to smelt iron, copper brass, steel and gold. But consider the kind of heat needed to smelt some of these ores. It would take 1,083 degrees centigrade to melt copper, to melt iron would require 1,532 degrees of heat, and even further combustion would be required to reduce the carbon content of iron so it would make good steel.
