“Nephi Had Been in the Land of Bountiful and Went Up Into the Mountain”

Monte S. Nyman

In contrast to their eight years in the wilderness, the people “exceedingly rejoiced” when they reached the beautiful land they called Bountiful (vv. 5–6). Therefore, they were not prepared for the revelation that came to Nephi when the Lord called him to go up into the mountain. The mountain is not named, but was probably a prominent one close to Bountiful. Although the Lord could have spoken to Nephi in Bountiful, the Lord probably called him into the mountain to have him isolated from the less faithful members of the group. As before, the Lord was using the mountain as his temple.
