Nephi pays high tribute to the Lord for blessing them during this journey and he points out that the commandments of God, no matter how difficult, must be fulfilled. He closes his story of the trek by saying they had been eight years in the wilderness. Since we know from 1 Nephi 10:7 that they left Jerusalem in 600 B.C. we now know that they had arrived at the end of their wilderness trek in 592 B.C.
