“Out of Wood a Bow, and Out of a Straight Stick, an Arrow”

W. Cleon Skousen

Notice that it was Nephi who took the initiative to discover some kind of wood which had a strong spring but would not break. Scientific naturalists tell us that no bow wood can be found in any of these mountains except in an area not far from the city of Medina. Nephi found the wood, made his bow and fashioned a straight stick for an arrow. He also fashioned a sling and gathered together small stones. Then he asked his father where he should go to hunt game. Poor Lehi was humbled to the depths. He pleaded with the Lord to forgive him for complaining, and then asked him to reveal where Nephi could go to find game.
