“Suffer Much for the Want of Food”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

Having seeds, provisions, and their heaven-sent compass, the little band set forth. They traveled four days in a south-southeasterly direction before camping at a place they named Shazer. Here they replenished their meat supply and then continued their journey. After traveling for many days they again camped, much in need of both food and rest. It was at this point that Nephi broke his steel bow; to add to their difficulties, the bows of his brothers had lost their spring. At this point too not only did Laman, Lemuel, and the sons of Ishmael begin to complain, but also Lehi, obviously much fatigued, began to murmur against the Lord. Of the entire family the record states that they did “suffer much for the want of food.”
