“Have Ye Inquired of the Lord”

Daniel H. Ludlow

Nephi gives a clue here as to how we can arrive at a knowledge of spiritual things. Lehi had told Nephi, Laman, and Lemuel of his dream. All three of them were evidently intrigued and interested in the possible interpretation of the symbols in their father's dream. Laman and Lemuel attempted to find their answers through the power of their own reasoning. Nephi, however, asked the Lord for the interpretation of these symbols, and as a result he received the great vision recorded in 1 Nephi 11-14. Nephi's question "Have ye inquired of the Lord?" teaches the same principle as that taught later by the resurrected Jesus Christ to the righteous Nephites of about A.D. 34: ". . . whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you." (3 Nephi 18:20.)
