“All Mankind Were in a Lost and in a Fallen State”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
Wherefore, Paul the Apostle taught the Roman Saints, “as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all mean, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). Man left unto himself and without external aid remains in a fallen and lost condition. Without the regenerating and enlivening powers of the atonement of Christ, all of the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve are without hope here and hereafter. Man has no more power to save and redeem himself than he has power to create himself; in fact, the redemption of the human soul is essentially the re-creation of man. It is and can be accomplished only by one greater than man-by a God. This is the true doctrine of “salvation by grace” taught by all the holy prophets since the world began.
