“The Things Which Are Pleasing Unto God written by Nephi”

Monte S. Nyman

In writing the things of God, Nephi’s ultimate desire was to bring his reader to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and be saved. The God Nephi speaks of is Christ (see 1 Nephi 19:10). The things of worth written by Nephi are the things that will bring salvation. Those who do not like what Nephi has written are labeling themselves as being of the world. Nephi gives even a harsher castigation as he concludes his writing: “no man will be angry at the words which I have written save he shall be of the spirit of the devil” (2 Nephi 33:5). Jacob was commanded by Nephi to follow the same guidelines as he became the keeper of the records. He was to engraven upon the plates “as much as it were possible, for Christ’s sake, and for the sake of the people” (Jacob 1:4).
