To the ancient Semitic people, oaths were sacred and could not be violated. The most solemn oath would be by the life of a living thing. Nephi explains this as he restrains Zoram so that he cannot return to Jerusalem. Nephi’s oath appeases the struggling Zoram, as he knows that no person would consider breaking such an oath.” (See Echoes, 468.)
