Laman and Lemuel were willing to go along with Nephi until he, like Laman, failed. At this point, Laman and Lemuel not only lost the wealth they had probably hoped to reclaim but also lost their honor because they had followed their younger brother. Their dismay at his failure probably had elements of self-justification that allowed them to deny Yahweh’s presence in their family story, especially since Nephi had made faith such a dominating element of his arguments. Their anger took a physical form.
