“As the Lord Liveth”

Daniel H. Ludlow

Another Hebrew custom illustrated in the Book of Mormon is the importance and binding effect of "taking of an oath." When Nephi said, "As the Lord liveth, and as we live" (1 Nephi 3:15), he was making a promise before the Lord that he would fulfill the other part of the oath that was to follow. That the taking of an oath was binding upon all the parties concerned is indicated later in the Book of Mormon when Nephi and Zoram give their promises or oaths to each other. (See 1 Nephi 4:32-37.)
